Twitter is a free social networking site that allows users to send and to read other users’ updates and micro-blogs, known as tweets. These tweets are text posts of up to 140 characters that are displayed on a user’s profile page and that are delivered to the user’s followers (that is, other users who have subscribed to follow a particular user). Delivery of these tweets can be restricted to a user’s circle of friends, or can otherwise be made available for access by anybody. Twitter users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, through SMSs (short message services), or through external applications.
Twitter users are estimated at several million and counting. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest-growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009 with a growth of 1382%.
Some short “how to Twitter” notes:
- Go to twitter.com and join for free; set up your profile and image.
- Select “protect my updates” box if you only want people authorized by you to view your updates.
- Once your Twitter account is set up, tell your friends your user name or send them the link to your twitter page – each user has his/her own page in the following form: twitter.com/username.
- Once you are registered you also can connect your mobile phone and instant messenger account.
- Messages you view on a phone or IM programme are also readable on your personal Twitter Web page.
- You can tweet from any of your registered devices and all your “followers” will see your message on their own Twitter pages.
- To follow and join friends from the web: to add friends log into your account. To find a user page utilize the search box at the top of your Twitter page. Press the “add” link to view a particular user’s updates. If the user account is set for public access the updates will be immediately visible. If the user account is set for private access your “friend” request will first need to be approved.
- Your Twitter page will contain some numbers, the most important of which signify the number of “followers” (these are the people who are following your tweets) you have and the number of “friends” you have (these are the people you are following).
Should you like, you can give your Twitter page your own design.
